UBI and Philippine Army Make Education Accessible to Indigenous Peoples in Bukidnon

The Philippine Army Alpha (Arbiter) Company, 89th Infantry (Makatao) Battalion, 10ID and construction industry giant Ulticon Builders, Inc. (UBI) joined forces to construct a temporary elementary school for the Matigsalog and Manobo Tribes of San Fernando, Bukidnon on March 7, 2020.

Despite the very fertile rivers and valleys of San Fernando, Bukidnon – the municipality has been hindered from maximizing developmental opportunities due to the remoteness of the area.  Amid socio-economic and cultural issues and conflicts, only very few elementary schools catering to the educational needs of indigenous children exist in its far-flung barangays and sitios.  Alarmingly, some schools are operated by organizations that promote radical, left-leaning ideologies.  These realities motivated Engr. Ruben M. Garcia (Project Manager, Matupe Project), 1st Lieutenant Darwin Catapang, and Captain Milbert D. Bonzato to work together on the makeshift school program.  For Sitio Luburon, Barangay Matupe – UBI donated one tonne of cement, one load of sand and gravel, 100 pieces of hollow blocks, 20 pieces 9mm steel, and two pieces of fly boards.

The Alpha (Arbiter) Company, 89th Infantry (Makatao) Battalion is stationed in Sitio Balakayo, Barangay Kalagangan to maintain and protect peace and order in its communities.  They believe that education is an enabler for peace and progress, so they continuously develop and implement concrete projects to make learning accessible to the residents.  Moreover, their mission has evolved from fighting only in armed battles to also fighting for the rights of Indigenous Peoples to education, security, and equality.

Through the years, UBI has valued its partnership with the different branches of the Philippine Army, specifically those located in Mindanao.  UBI seeks to provide equal opportunities for the country’s marginalized communities, including Indigenous Peoples.  By supporting the construction of schools and funding initiatives on education, UBI is one with the Philippine Army in supporting our Lumad brothers and sisters to reach their full potential in the name of progress for their communities.
